How much does a grant of probate cost?
Fixed fee of £1,800 (Incl VAT but not including disbursements) (where no full Inheritance Tax form IHT400 is required)
This includes receiving the information from you as to the assets and liabilities of the estate, preparing the application paperwork for your approval and signature and obtaining the grant of probate.
Breakdown of grant of probate costs:
Legal fees £1,500
VAT on legal fees £300
As well as our fees you must also pay for any expenses we incur on your behalf. These expenses are called “disbursements” and sometimes attract VAT.
Disbursements which are payable in all matters are payable in addition to this fee:
- Probate court fee of £300
- Copies of grant at £1.50p each
- Bankruptcy (£2 per executor)
Further optional disbursements dependent on the circumstances of your matter include (these fees are estimates and subject to change):
- £83.40 Post in the London Gazette – Protect against unexpected claims from unknown creditors.
- £115.20 Post in a Local Newspaper – This also helps to protect against unexpected claims. This will vary depending on where the advert is placed.
- £195 + VAT unclaimed asset search – This ensures that all assets are claimed, assists in locating accounts and checking that all liabilities are settled.
Disbursements are costs related to your matter that are payable to third parties, such as court fees. We handle the payment of the disbursements on your behalf to ensure a smoother process.

How long does grant of probate take?
On average, obtaining a grant of probate on estates takes around 6 – 9 months. This is largely dependent on the time taken by 3rd parties to provide information and Probate Registry time frames.
